Gastric Bypass/Lap Band and Major Weight Loss

Just curious...

Who's had the surgery?

How was the process for you?

Are you glad you had it?

Did you opt for the plastic surgery post Bypass?

Who has considered it?

This time last year I considered gastric bypass, then changed my mind a little later to considering the lap band procedure.

Reason being, in order to even be considered for the kidney transplant list, I needed to lose a total of 100 lbs.  That seemed so unrealistic to me that I thought that surgery was my only answer.

Rewind to Thanksgiving 2007.  My boss challenged the staff to a Fit Club type contest.  Everyone who participated paid a fee of $10 and had to weigh in with the most honest/most secretive employee and whoever lost the most weight at the end of the contest won the money.

I was amped about winning, but I really didn't think I could do it.  After all, I'd tried losing weight so many times and never lost more than 10 and before I knew it, that 10 would be right back.

Well this time I didn't "diet", I changed my eating habits.  I still hit Mickey D's almost daily, but instead of a value meal, I'd order a grilled chicken Caesar salad or a fish sandwich and a fruit & walnut salad or if I felt the need to have a "complete" meal, I'd order a Happy Meal.

I did eat Smart Ones for lunch, accompanied with some extra vegetables (that stuff don't make you full and you know it!) and lo and behold, I started losing weight!

I was still working at the Y at the time, so I had free access to the women's health center, the nautilus room and water aerobics classes and at the final weigh-in, I'd lost a total of 25 lbs and won the money!

Fast forward to February of this year.  The doctor scheduled the surgery to have the fistula put in my arm because my kidneys showed no signs of getting healthier.  I found out that in March, our insurance would change, to include surgical weight loss options, with a co-pay of $5000 and again I considered it.

Then I got a real strong case of vanity because I couldn't imagine being happy at say 150 lbs. with all the fatty flab hanging, especially when the removal of that is considered cosmetic and not covered under my policy.  So I didn't.

Fast forward yet again, to July 2008.  I began dialysis and miraculously lost 25 lbs. in the first month.  I had to adhere to an even stricter diet than before and the end result was favorable even without me trying.

I believe I have plateaued because I've been at a steady weight now for about 3 weeks.

Honestly, the first 50 was a snap.  I know this second 50 will be some work, especially since the winter months will be here soon.

I'm up for it.

Have you lost a considerable amount of weight (25 or more)?

Hell, have you lost a minimal amount of weight?  How did you do it?

Here's your chance to brag!

  1. Well, i've lost and gained, and gained, and lost, and some mo' shit! It's one being repetitious cycle of gaining and losing weight.. what works best for me, is not having any of lifes trials and tribulations, when a bitch is stressed, a bitch eats GOOD... and when life is good, i eat not necessairly healthier, but not as much...

I have a family friend that is currently recovering from Gastric, her reason for doing it was for health reasons, she got sick of being sick, and she knew that her weight, was her biggest issue...

I can't offer any personal knowledge when it comes to either procedure, but I will say this, when it comes to matters of a health, one must consider all options... if Gastric or the lap band is the road that you must travel, i say go for it! don't worry about the extra skin now, cross that bridge when you get to it... right now, it's all about being the healthiest Deedles you can be, if for no one else, your children...

  2. One time, a few years ago, I told my doctor I wanted to lose some weight, he asked me how much and I said about about 100 pounds. He looked at me incredulously and asked me what my goal weight was. and I said 150. To which he replied, without batting an eye, if you wanna see what you would look like at 150 pounds, I can take you to the cancer ward and you can have a real good look.

    *blank stare*

He then went on to tell me that my ideal weight for my height would be 180. That should be the minimum. pffft on him. LOLOL He then asked me if I was part German and I said yeah why? He then told me that I could REALLY get them skinny thoughts out of my head. LOLOL Apparently, my bone structure is rather large and me trying to be *skinny* would make me look sick.

    Alright then.

LOLOL I mean really? Who was I fooling? LMAO One good thing that came out of that conversation was my personal self image (i know this isn't the blog topic). I always thought that being skinny would solve my problems. I was already tall, I didn't want to be *thick* too.

Fast forward to recently. After I took the cops physical endurance test, I thought about getting the lap band surgery as a quick fix to be able to pass the test next time (hoping in the process I could lose the boobs which led to my rather hilarious failing of the test http://sistahgurl.multiply.com/journal/item/60/Well..._I_am_not_discouraged ), so i go and find out about such and once again I am laughed at. SMH With the lap band, you have to have a need to lose at least 100 pounds and apparently, I have no such need.

    pffft on them too.

So Imma have to go about this the hard way and really hit the pavement. I think it would be better for me if I lost it the hard way, that way I would really appreciate being fit and try to stay that way.

As to the second part of your question, back before the baby was born, I actually hit the *dream* weight of 190 pounds and lost 45 pounds. I did it through Metabolife (before they took the ephedrine out), Lean Cuisine and lots of water.

    OK, i REALLY rambled. LOLOL

  4. I asked my doc & she said no because of my height & the way I carry the weight. She feels I can do it on my own. My insurance doesn't cover it anyway, so it's not an issue for me.

  5. Yup. It was over 50lbs from just walking.

  6. We are doing the same thing now at my job. $2.00 a week until December 1st... I have lost 9 lbs in the first 4 weeks. I messed up this week, and I weigh in tomorrow... so I will keep you posted. I am back on the wagon tomorrow...

  7. I just recently lost 15 lbs and am on my way to losing more. I'm trying not to watch the scale too much because i know that the first thing you lose is an extensive amount of water weight and then the lbs start shedding off gradually. I have been eating differently, less and every day i do a 30 min cardio and 120 crunches (sometimes more). I am going to start yoga Monday along with my cardio to do some extra strengthening and stretching before my work out.

On Sept. 26th it will be my 1 yr anniversary of having surgery. I did not have the gastric or lap band but had to have a surgery which rid me of over 60+lbs and soon I will have to have another surgery just like it. I look forward to losing weight but I am in no way trying to get skinny but i'm too short to be this plush.

I considered having weight-loss surgery some years ago after having been on phen phen and other weight-loss drugs, losing a substantial amount of weight only for it to do me dirty in the long run. Now from those medications I may have suffered from some long term affects but i'm not claiming them. But that was then, it didn't take me long to see that weight-loss surgery for me was a cop out and that I could lose the weight if I tried. So now I am determined. I get up some mornings at 6 am and don't even want to start but i do it anyways and feel good about it seconds later. I wouldn't change my own self-discipline for the world of being thin. Um...am I sticking with the topic.. I looked up seen Queen was rambling and noticed i was too lmbo.

  8. i say hire a personal trainer and keep working with the strict diet you're on and do it au naturale because in the end, you STILL have to do those things to keep weight off EVEN if you have the surgery. A VERY close friend of mine had the gastric by-pass and I know of one other person who did too and it was VERY successful for them and what worked for them due to a lifetime of obesity and challenges to losing the weight no matter how hard they tried. MY good friend had this done about 4 years ago and she is committed to exercising and she went from about 300lbs to less than 150. She has to be a size 9/10 or maybe even a 7 now. She looks great and yes she has to deal with a lot of lose skin which she had surgery last year on her arms to eliminate the skin on that area.

it's all about health and wellness and understanding the risks to being obese versus whatever approach you take to losing it. I think gastric bypass has saved the lives of many people who simply could not get the necessary weight off otherwise. I would say try it naturally FIRST and wholeheartedly...i bet if you get some help and hang in there you won't need the surgery but for some it is the only way to help them.

I dunno, i thought about the lap band should I continue struggling SERIOUSLY with my weight loss in a few more years but we'll see. To me, it is never about vanity although the thought of having all tha loose skin is nasty to me but I could live with that as opposed to a life shortened due to obesity-related illnesses which are indeed life threatening.

  10. Don't get me started now that i'm on this weight-loss kick i'll be off on a tangent in a quick second. I have become obsessed now with losing weight and exercising and that's strange but i can be watching tv and doing arm exercises with my little weights or therma band i got in rehab. I even do it at the computer along with extra crunches. I'm practically doing exercise or thinking about it all the way up til i fall asleep.

  13. I lose wieght, then I gain it all back. I asked my dr about the surgery. He told me, I was better off losing the weight on my own. So I changed my eating habits and took back up belly dancing, the weight is slowly coming off. I was shocked, I could get into a 14/16 dress.

  14. Well, I currently do weight watchers and have lost 19.8 pounds to date. I've been on a plateau for about 3 months, losing and gaining the same pound over and over *grrrr!* but I know I can do! I used to do WW back in 2003 before I had brain surgery and lost 80 or 90 pounds (down from about 275 to 187) in about a year, but then the brain surgery and the recovery from that, I had to stop the program until I recuperated, however, they put me on steroids to regain my strength and I couldn't control my appetite. I regained all but 10 pounds. and back in 1995, I lost 40 pounds in 3 months just by walking 4 miles a day. I just need to buckle down and start walking again b/c I know that walking is key for me to lose weight. I started WW this time size 22 and currently a 20, almost (but not quite) and 18 :o)

I've sort of considered the surgery, but not seriously. I can definitely see having it done for medical reasons because our health is a priority, however, the problem with it is people don't actually learn the correct way to eat, they don't change their habits, and then start to regain all that weight back. You're definitely better off doing on your own (or a group like WW), but you (we) got to remember it's not a diet, but a lifestyle change, i.e., permanent change, that is the only way it will stick after you've lost the weight.

  15. I've casually mentioned gastric to my doctor and he basically told me I need to change my diet and exercise. I'm sure I could find a doctor that would do it but at this point, I'm not interested. I may change my mind later.

The most I've lost is 25 pounds on weight watchers five years ago. I have gained it all back.

  17. I worked on a floor where gastric by-pass roux-n-y and lapbanding procedures were the specialty. My very best advice is don't underestimate the time spent working on ones self mentally speaking. Really get to know yourself and your psyche. They give psychiatric evaluations as part of the screening process, but money talks.
I am really glad to read about doctors telling patients to hold on a minute. Those doctors sound like they have your best interest at heart. I'm not telling anyone don't do it. Im just saying it's imperative to know whats going on with self mentally and do the home work beyond weight loss what happens to these folks in the years to come.
I have heard of some people going on a gastric bypass diet where one eats as if they have had the surgery to get the same results.

  18. PS I say this as a nurse and a sister as my sister next to me had the surgery three years ago.

  19. For me the consideration of having any kind of weight loss surgery has always been NO. I have been on both sides of the fence when it comes to weight loss. But I feel that if you slowly change your eating habits and your ways on exercise you can drop the weight and maintain it off. I am not saying that it is easy. From a medical stand point I am healthy with the exception of my damn knees. I have shocked even my own doctors by my test results with every physical that I have. Now I gained all of my weight after I had my first two kids and it has been a battle to to get it off. After my last surgery this past January I decided to really make a change in my life because my surgeon told me that if I do not take some of this weight off of my knees that the next surgery on my knee will be full knee replacement surgery because I've had knee surgery on my right knee 3 times in the past 10 yrs. So Back in April of this year I started my healthy weight loss journey and I must say that it has been a slow process but I am still in the fight. I have lost a total of 23 lbs and I've gone from a size 24 to a 18/20 depending on the clothes. I love how I feel and look. I've had to dig in mentally and spiritually to keep going on a day to day. I allow my self one cheat day a week but I don't over do it. I drink tons of water, I cut down on my starch intake...shoo I'm Puerto Rican we live off of rice and beans...lol You can also enjoy your favorite food just watch your portion control and try to change up the recipe with healthier ingredients.

Deedles I wish you and everyone else who is in the weight loss fight the very best. Sometimes it's good to reach out and talk to other people who may be experiencing the same problems or if they have conquered a problem then maybe they can help you.

    Stay strong and focused.

  20. Not true. I had the surgery nine years ago... and I was never restricted to anything as minimal as an ounce of food, except for the first week after surgery, and I had to eat/drink an ounce per hour. However, I want to say that gastric bypass is not a magic pill. I lost about 100 pounds in the first year (which left me still a pretty big girl) and after I stopped working out like I was training for a triathlon, the weight slowly crept back on and I'm just under where I started originally.

I'll tell you what my gastroenterologist and nutritionist told me -- it's a PIECE in the PUZZLE. Weight loss for most folks our size is work. Work to get there and work to stay there. The only regret I have is not waiting a couple of years for the laparascopic procedure to become more widespread. I had the full open procedure and I have a very long scar to show for it...

  21. I am going to get my referral and consultation for this soon. I'm going to do the lap band. I am tired of being this fat. I know it's my own fault, and that makes me dislike myself even more. Bad cycle.
I was witha personal trainer a couple years ago and it was working, I was into it. I lost about 20 lbs. But we slid off in our sessions, and I got lazy. I CAN do it, I just have to get that motivation to do it again. That's the hardest part for me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes I had the Gastric bypass I had it 2/20/07. I have lost 120 pounds to date (My Weight Loss Dr. wants me to get down to 150 lbs. I DON'T THINK SOOOOOO. My goal is 250). The reasons I have done it is because I wanted to give my husband a kidney and have a baby. Well when Shawn and I went to the Transplant Center. They told me that I would have to get down to 210 lbs (Shawn is against me giving him a kidney). and there was a possibility that I wouldn't be able to have kids and I may end up needing a kidney down the line. That I may get High Blood Pressure or Diabetes (I have no health problems...just fat).

I worked out 5 days a week and it started to taper off. Now i just walk a lot because I am pregnant and my Dr. knows me. That once I get in the gym I want to lift and walk for hours. Can't do that now.

Make sure you want to do it and you are ready for the change of life. I just wanted to help Shawn out and have a family. I am still trying to loose even with the baby (it ain't easy...this kid is hungry and that trips me out, because I am not use to eating a lot).

If you do it you have my support. I under your reasoning, Shawn wanted to do it to, but the kidney Dr. said NOOOO. That it would make matters worse.

  23. can you imagine ME wanting to have weight loss surgery? lol

well, I've considered it for some time. Dr. keeps telling me that I am "pre-diabetic" and that weight loss is the only way I will not develop it. you know I already have the HBP and thyroid issues. I've done some research on the lapband procedure, but the thought of a gastric bypass scares me. one of Mom's childhood friends died from liposuction. been scared of major surgery ever since. so far, just with the small eating changes I've made since June, I've managed to lose some weight. I just want to be under 200 again. just like one of the other ladies said, for my height my ideal weight is between 170-180. That's just fine with me. I'm not trying to be a string bean. Jessica and Eesha do that just fine without me, lol.

I'm glad you're losing the weight like you want to, even in spite of the dialysis situation. I still go that kidney when you're ready for it. I cant wait to see you when you're 150lbs!

    *smooch and poof*

  24. This is REAL talk and my good friend who had it says the exact same thing. If you commit to a LIFESTYLE change, whether you have the surgery or not, you will lose weight and manage it. THERE IS NO MAGIC to it but TO DO IT! I'm glad someone who had teh surgery spoke on that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lyricsangel....kudos to you on striving and making such progress. to lose 120lbs is NO easy task! However, I would say, don't you think 250 is still too much weight and still puts you at risk for diabetes and ultimately would not make you a likely candidate to give up any organs if that is the case? I don't know how tall you are but for the most part, for a woman to be more than 200lbs and maintain that weight over time is a recipe for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. i say that because I'm one of them and I was weighing too much for too long thinking just because I'm not yet diagnosed with any of that stuff, i must be healthy BUT this past year I got TWO diagnoses that let me know that weighing 200+lbs is simply not healthy: fatty liver AND high cholesterol. So, I feel all of my sistas on this weighty issue but ulitmately, it is about health and being healthy means being real about our need to lose weight for our health. Black women are dying from so many preventable illnesses. this blog is making think about my own experience with weight.

All i can say is i support all of my sistas who are doing the best they can. We have to think about ourselves and what WE need. So many people depend on us, we have to start taking excellent care of ourselves. I'm struggling with this myself.

  26. I've done the yo-yo diet thing and frankly am sick of it! I'm close to 250 lbs on a 5 foot 2 frame which is so scary to me. If I were to go by the weight-height chart thing I would say that I do need to lose at least 100 to be an ideal healthy weight, but just looking at me I don't really "look" like your typical gastric surgery candidate. I think I carry my weight rather well.

Right now I'm content with just getting back to under 200. That's as a good enough goal for me. I started back in the gym last week and was impressed that I can still do the elliptical for a full half hour. (It's a tough half an hour, but dammit I push onward towards my goal). I did the low carb thing in the past with some success, but the problem with that is I think too much protein is a bad thing with the kidney issue (correct?). So insteand of "dieting" I will just eat smaller portions. When I go out to eat, I make sure I have take out box. Water is my achilles heel, so I have to make sure I get plenty of it with some lemon to help out the taste.

I was thinking that we need to do that 50 Million Pound challenge...RedEye set up a multiply team but it's probably sitting there collecting dust.

  27. For me I am a lotttttttt of muscle (ok jokes table muscle)...but I use to work out every day in high school because I was on the track team. For me to get down to that is perfect. I personally think that I will get sick if I get any smaller then that. I know it is not a medical term but I am big boned and I put on a lot of muscle....a lot. I am not going to stress my body to go down way past what it is supposed to be. I know someone that made herself sick because she was on this kick and it ended up doing damage to her body instead of improving it.

  28. SPEAK ON IT, sis... Gastric bypass is INDEED major surgery...

One of my auntie's childhood friends died right on the table having the procedure and this was a couple of years after I did it. My whole family begged me not to go there and they are thankful that I am still reasonably healthy. One thing I have definitely noticed is that a lot of GB patients trade one set of illnesses for another. I talked to another of my auntie's childhood friends, who had been bigger than a mack truck all her life, at our family reunion. She's probably well under 200# now, but she's complaining that in the time since she had her procedure she has so many stomach issues, and just generally doesn't feel as good as she did beforehand. I also know a chick that had a lap band before my original surgical date, and had to go back in for a full GB. She struggled with anemia and nausea for years. Her mom had the bypass and it almost killed her... sepsis... pneumonia...

    Once again.. it's not easy!

  31. well i think being less than 200lbs wouldn't make any woman sick unless she was losing the weight in an unhealthy way to begin wiht. it seems like for a woman to have muscle mass at a greater ratio than fat would make her leaner and weigh less since muscle weighs more than fat, less bulkier than fat but also burns more calories and increases metabolism. i can't imagine a muscular woman weighing more than 200lbs. well most black women can carry more weight than other women but we don't actually have bigger bones, we're just built differently but technically, bones don't make you bigger or smaller...lol.

i think if your doctor is monitoring your health closely and working with you, you should't get sick dropping weight below 200lbs as long as it's done right and slowly. a healthy weight is not just what we think is healthy when most of us obviously are off in our thinking about our weight most of the time but it's the point at which our body optimally functions.

i say work closely with your doctor no matter what you do and know your numbers for bp, cholesterol, glucose, etc. and keep them in check regularly. i know diabetes is rampant in my family and i try to keep on all of that.

  32. Oh trust me, my weight loss Dr. and I fight all the time. But he knows it is unrealistic and has said it many times (for me to get down to 150 that is), but he said he has to say it because of the oath he took.

I think I will be fine at 250. I was 435 at my highest in Dec. 06 and now I am 315. But I can't focus totally on loosing weight now that I am pregnant!

  34. My goal is 200. I won't say how much I have to lose to get there.
After I had my son I was 216, and people were telling me I looked scrawny! lol I guess they were just always used to seeing me bigger than that, so any loss looked like a lot.
My ultimate goal is to be a size 10. But I'd be ecstatically happy with 12-14.

  36. I know 5 people that had gastro & lap band. I myself could not do it. THey have all done great, but had to deal with some serious life change. Ive seen some get VERY sick because they relapse about what they can eat. I would suggest you work with a nutritionist & do it that way, since you already have health issues. Gastirc bypass is nothing to sneeze at. I remember one time my friend ate a little tootse roll, & spend the rest of the day vomiting. The excess skin is another issue if you lose too fast...I've also seen someone put it back on(some of it) & go through a severe depression. With every quick fix, there are consequences. I love food. Im not giving up my oxtail & rum cake for nada! lol Seriously though, I'd only consider this if you KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT you are prepared to change your eating habits for the rest of your life. At least with a diet, you can splurge here & there. None of that with gastric bypass! WIth lap bands, each band is like 10,000, so it can get very pricey, and the results are not the same as gastric bypass.

  37. motivation is the hardest part for me, too. I'd like to comfortably lose about 30 pounds. We're supposed to go walking later on after my son gets home from school. I've found that working out in the afternoon works best for me. I just can't do it in the mornings. I've lost and gained over the years after I turned 30. When I lost, cutting back, watching what I ate (less bread, no fried foods, etc.) and becoming more active worked well. I just tend to slack up and get lazy and end up gaining it and a couple more pounds back with it. So, I've got to find that motivation to get active and stay active.

  38. i have a great diet plan for you. Its called Michael Thurmond 6 weeks body makeover. When i started i weigh in at 287 lbs i now weigh 197 lbs I still have a least 57lbs to go but i look and feel so much better. The only problem i have is all the loose skin, i know i will need surgery to have it removed one day but i am glad the weight is really coming off. Now i need a personal trainer because the rest of the weight seems to be fighting back LOL just playing.... but its hard to get the weight off around the abdomen.

  39. Your mind is WAY in the gutter. I could stand to lose a few more pounds myself.

  40. I remember losing 45lbs right before I started high school. I was so proud of myself. I was outside a lot and just watched what I ate. I slowly gained weight over the years due to medication, & stressful situations, and poor timing (bad habit of eating at night). At my heaviest, I was 280. I went to the Dr. this past Thursday, and I was 267 ..which I thought was pretty cool. I had been hanging between 275 & 280 for the longest. I just talked to him about doing weight loss surgery. I am tired of taking medication, and frankly, too young. I told him that I was interested in the surgery, but wanted to try just being under a Dr. supervised diet and exercising. Well, told the Dr. office called me and wanted to come in tomorrow because my test results showed that I am now DIABETIC. *sigh* However, the DEVIL IS A LIAR! I am going to get this health thing together. I know for my insurance, I have to be under a Dr. supervised diet for at least 6 months, so I am going to do that. If I am comfortable where I am, I will continue just under his care and not do the surgery. However, If I feel like I am not improving like I should, then I will submit for the surgery. I think I want to do the lap band. I know you lose the weight slower that way, and I think that's ideal for me. I don't want to go around looking like a bobble head crackhead.

I have seen people who have gone through the surgery, and I see where some fail to change their *thinking* about food and how to approach it. My co-worker had it in January, and looks great. However, she still approaches food the same way she did when she was 100lbs heavier. That's not good. People don't always recognize that there is more to just having the surgery. To maintain your new size, you need to exercise to tone up and keep your body going, and you need to change how you view and approach food. Food as healthy helper for your body; not an crutch for your emotions.

  41. Shan, I'mma tell you this. My mom was diagnosed as diabetic (non-insulin) and within six months, had changed her diet habits so drastically that they took her right off the pill again. It can be done and yes, the devil IS a liar!
