9/11-Revisited

glitter-graphics.com

Tomorrow is the anniversary of 9/11.  I hesitate to use the term "anniversary", that seems like it should be reserved for celebrated times...In February I originally posted this, seeking the thoughts and feelings of my DMV friends.  Now I've gained more NY friends and I still want to know...

I briefly talked to Unka STO about this while we were in DC, but I'm opening it up to EVERYONE.

  5. I remember that day so vividly. I was still kind of new to the area when it happened. I was talking to one of my co-workers who was from Brooklyn, and he told me about the first plane. This was when they still thought it was an accident. Then the other plane was hit. He was trying to reach his people at home because he had friends that worked in the WTC and his father worked there also. And one of my friends from college worked in the area as well so I was trying to make sure she wasn't there. Then we heard about the Pentagon. It was one of those moments that didn't seem real, it all seemed like a movie. I remember I actually had to go to work the following day, and I had to drive past the Pentagon(well, that was after I got into my accident because my mind was preoccupied while driving to work lol). I didn't think I would be able to because of all of the security but I went in. My co-worker still hadn't heard from his father yet that morning. I remember him saying that he had to prepare himself for the fact that he may be gone and my heart dropped. Luckily he turned out to be okay and he heard from him the next day.

But it was one of those things that you will always remember

  6. I too remember the day vividly. Although I was living in Ga at the time, I also work for TJ Maxx and so there was a duality of tragedy.

First, although nothing actually occurred in Georgia, due to misinformation and the FAA not knowing how many planes were still unaccounted for, the governor order everybody to go home due to the concern that the CDC is located in Atlanta and it too may be a target. If the CDC had been hit, God only knows what would have happened. people who knows that Atlanta shuts down for 2 inches of snow hadn't seen anything when we were shut down after the hit. Everybody was sent home, schools, city, county and state government personnel, retailers closed early, etc... Traffic was an abosolute nightmare.

Second, TJ Maxx Companies lost 12 corporate employees on that first plane out. So there was also that somber mood in the months to follow because many of the management staff knew of these people.

Although I wasn't affected directly, besides closing up shop waaaaaay early, I still can remember the shock and horror of watching on the television in the employee lounge the second plane striking live on television. The only thing I can describe it as is watching a real life horror show.

  7. I was working in Midtown Manhattan at the time (as a matter of fact I am still in that area). I just got off vacation the day before and every Tuesday my office had a office meeting. Well that morning, I was running late and my brother and I ususally leave out at the same time but that morning we did not. I dropped my son off at day care and got on the train when I got to Atlantic Avenue we sat there for 20 minutes and I already knew I was going to have the not being late lecture from my director, we got to DeKalb and we waited another 20 minutes and then we finally were on the Manhattan Bridge and this point I was like I am going to get fired and it I could not justify it and i could not figure why for the life of me why the train was running slow then all of sudden someone screamed and it took me out of my thoughts I looked out the window and the first building was on fire and the first person I could think of was my friend Keesha we grew up together and she was my son's godsister. Once I got to work, they already had the tv on and the meeting was cancelled. I had to call the employees that were not in the office and then I proceeded to call my friend's family she was fine.

I did not lose anyone close in this tragedy, however I did find out that two classmates from high school were killed. One from my graduating class and one from the class of 1990
