Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace

Stop the Wedding - Etta James

My uncle is 6 years younger than me and almost 10 years ago got married for the first time. He and his fiance got matching tongue rings and their names tattooed on each other. They were so in love. Well prior to meeting her, he was a player to center of his heart. For reasons unknown, he was able to snag a PK (preacher's kid) and she was who he propsed to.

I remember the wedding day vividly. My sister and I sat on the right side of the sanctuary on the row behind my grandparents. Somewhere mid ceremony, my sister started counting 1-2-3-4 of my uncles ex-girlfriends in the congregation.

Did this negro have a death wish? Was he crazy to invite them? Are they crazy enough that they all crashed the wedding?

Well, as you can imagine, when it got the part where they ask if there's any reason why the couple shouldn't be joined, there were quite a few people holding their breath, including my uncle. (Did I mention it was the father of bride performing the ceremony?)

It was funny seeing him regain his color when that moment passed. I personally have never witnessed a wedding where someone actually stood up and said something. (Though I've been to a few where the subliminal messages were flowing freely.)

Unfortunately the first marriage didn't work out (I found later she was a rebound chick and they shouldn't have married in the first place) and my uncle is now on his second.

The first wife's name tattoo is now covered with a tiger and his tongue ring is out because he's a police officer in the Chicago suburbs.

What my question to you is, have you ever attended a wedding where someone actually stood up and protested? Tell us about it!

I thought this was appropriate for some cake tops, LOL.

  3. Naw, I've never been to one of those. Best believe, there was plenty of protesting BEFORE the wedding, tho.

  6. One of my exes was at my wedding. She's a member of the church, so we knew someone would tell her. When my uncle got to that part, you should have seen my family look in her direction. One of my uncles was a U.S. Capitol Police officer at that time and I swear I saw him reach inside his jacket.

  7. Did your uncle actually invite his exgirlfriends, or did the nosey heffas just SHOW UP ANYWAY? you know how OUR folks do. LOL.

I have 3 uncles that have 8 ex-wives between them...not counting their 4th wives [for 2 of them] or the 3rd wife for the other one. I guess THEY LOVE GETTING MARRIED, huh?

I have never been to a wedding where somebody ACTUALLY SAID SOMETHING....but hell, I was probably ASLEEP if they did say something.

WAKE ME UP WHEN ITS TIME FOR THE RECEPTION. Weddings are boring as hell and moments in my life I will NEVER get back......at least I can partyUP at the reception.

I think I will just show up FOR THE RECEPTION from now on....I'll still bring a gift, too.

  8. I don't know if it was on purpose or not but a few of the weddings I have been to they didn't even ask that question. I don't know if they were told before hand and didn't want to risk any foolishness but that question wasn't asked

  12. I went to one of these, too. I remember a group of us standing outside the reception, including the bride's sister, taking bets on how long it was going to last.

I won. They didn't make it past their 1st year.

  19. Funny story. I have to say that I've never personally witness anyone bold enough to stand up and say something. But you could feel the vibes that someone would.

  20. Also, this is yet another good example why folks shouldn't be tattooing someone's name on their body. Just never know when folks fall out of love.

  21. I've never witnessed this either, but since y'all are my peeps, I'll confess to contemplating pulling a Vesta-Congratulations...but only for a fleeting moment. Common sense kicked in & took those thoughts away.

  22. I have never seen that and I hope to never see it at someone else's (or even my own wedding!!) because I promise something crazy would go flying out my mouth if it happenned.

    I can see it now...

Pastor: If anyone believes that this union should not go forth, please speak now or forever hold your piece...

Hating Heffa in the audiece: Ray Ray, you know she can't love you like I do!!

Audience: "Gasps, mumbles, and stares at Bonquiffa"

    Me: AWWWWWW SHIT NOW!!

Audience: "Gasp and appalled cause I just cussed in church"

(Even at my best behavior, when I am caught totally off guard, no telling what comes out my mouth. I)

  23. Naw, I never experienced it but like you said I've been to some that it was a sho nuff shot gun wedding..LOL The subliminal messages were quite clear. Now, I did go to one in which the mother of the groom didn't like his son's bride that she had a heart attack at the reception of the wedding...The bride thought she had a heart attack on purpose...LOL
