One of my favorite pasttimes is watching old movies. I don't do it nearly enough, but I enjoy them (although it's heartbreaking at times to see what roles we were only allowed to have).
Here are a few of my favorites. If you have any to add, please do. I'll be looking for them!
Imitation of Life (1959 version...I also like the 30's version)
A Cabin in the Sky-1943
Carmen Jones-1954
One of my favorites: Born Yesterday
ReplyDeleteUptown Saturday Night

ReplyDeletesorry, no offense, just an observation
ReplyDeleteI LOOOOOOVE Carmen Jones and Uptown Saturday Night.
ReplyDeleteI also loved The Mack.
I have to check this out. I've never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteThere an elegance in the old movies that new movies can't touch.
ReplyDeletePlus they get their drank on! LOL
Doesn't young Pearl Bailey look like Queen Latifah?
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it, yes.
ReplyDeleteClaudine
ReplyDeleteThe Mack
Blacula (cuz it's funny as hell)
Sugar Hill (Zombies)
Cotton Comes to Harlem
Black Ceasar
Gone with the Wind
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (that was some twisted shit! LOL)
Well, based on Sto and Dee's recommendations, I added those movies to my blockbuster queue :o) Course I already have 100 movies in the queue, so it may be a while until I see them, but I will eventually :)
ReplyDeleteThe Bad Seed (The Good Son was a remake of this)
ReplyDeleteOne of my all time favorites..pre-internet, when the computer was just getting on the scene. This department was in charge of finding all facts and figures. A must see to appreciate where were are now technologically: The Desk Set, with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.
ReplyDeleteTo Kill A Mockingbird, based on the book by Harper Lee. Gregory Peck was amazing. This one got to one of the hearts of the matter when it comes to racism. In this scene, Atticus (Gregory Peck) is guarding the jail where his client, a black man, is being kept after being accused of raping a white woman. When the lynch squad tries to take over, Scout and her crew jump out of the bushes. Scout unwittingly helps these men see how wrong they are. Very moving scene.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good movie!
ReplyDeleteThat was one of the first movies I watched about racism, and obviously it had a profound effect on me.
ReplyDeleteI 2nd that!
ReplyDeleteHow could I forget the funniest movie of all time? BLAZING SADDLES
ReplyDeleteI love "Imitation of Life" but that's about it for me. Everything else has to be in color.
